A native of Virginia, June was born January 8, 1919 in Harrisonburg, VA a daughter of the late Daniel Webster and Elva Catherine Simmons Kiser.
She lived most of her young life in Highland County, Virginia until she went to Harrisonburg State Teachers College (now James Madison University) where she graduated in 1940 as a Home Economist and taught High School in Northern Virginia for 23 years.
In 1941 she married William Patterson Ames and had six children. Mr. Ames was president of Murphy & Ames Lumber Company in Arlington, Virginia.
In 1979, after the death of her first husband, she married Dr. Harry Burgess Wood, Jr. from Monterey, Virginia. He was a doctor for cancer at the National Institute of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. He traveled to 89 countries setting up research laboratories for the cure of cancer.
Mary and her husband grew disbud chrysanthemums and both were international judges for the International Chrysanthemum Society for 30 years at which time she traveled to 59 countries. Nine of those countries, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, India, Wales, Canada and many states in the UK and the United States, were all members of the national organization. Dr. Wood passed away in 2002 while he was International President.
June was a member of Frankford United Methodist Church and Bradley Hills Presbyterian Church.
She is survived by her children, Pamela J. Ames of Fredericksburg, VA, William K. Ames of Reston, VA, Nathaniel W. Ames of Arlington, VA, Susan E. Fannin of Tomahawk, KY, Deborah J. Brown of Frankford, WV, Abigail M. Spencer of Montross, VA and Marian W. Hambrick of Denver, Colorado. Also surviving are 20 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 10:00 am Tuesday, July 24, 2012 at the Frankford United Methodist Church, with Rev. Phillip Hickman officiating. Burial will follow at 3:00 pm Tuesday at the Monterey Cemetery in Monterey, Va.
Friends may call Monday, July 23, 2012 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Lewisburg.
Pallbearers will be Nathan Ames, John Mueller, Andrew Mueller, Garrett Fannin, Butler Brown, Justin Ames, Harley Fannin, Jacob Isaacs, William Spencer and James Spencer.
In lieu of flowers, donations of sympathy may be made to Frankford United Methodist Church.
